Living Future unConference Sessions: (Friday, May 19 • 10:30am – 12:30pm) Living Building Design Inspired by Nature: Biomimicry Genius of Place Workshop

Can you introduce yourself to the Living Future Community?

I have spent my career connecting others to nature through the use of indoor plant design, living walls, and moss wall art. My passion is to create biophilic connections in the built environment through the use of natural elements. In 2011, I became passionate in biomimicry and the possibilities of changing the way we design and build our world. I went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Biomimicry from Arizona State University and was certified as a Biomimicry Professional by Biomimcry 3.8.

What drives you to do the work that you do?

Passion for a better world. We never know how the work we do will affect others, but living my passion, it is my hope that I may have a ripple effect, no matter how small.

Tell us about your session at Living Future? Why should people attend and what can they expect to take away?

Nature is a resource bank of solutions. Looking at natural strategies within the context of each biome can help solve design challenges. The session goal is to look at some of those strategies and translate them in to an abstracted design principle, which can be applied to a built environment challenge. The goal of the session is to familiarize the attendees with the biomimicry design process as it relates to the genius of each place and how it relates to specific biomes.

What are you most excited to experience at this year’s unConference?

Spending time in Seattle with those of like mind and overarching goals is invigorating and feeds me. I always come away recharged and ready to take my work to the next level. Nothing beats reconnecting with friends; it is the thing that excites me the most.

Who is someone that you believes represents Genius and Courage? Why?

Jamie Dwyer – Because as an architect and biologist she has learned to truly bridge the gap between the two disciplines and apply them. Additionally, she has a unique ability to communicate to any type of audience in and effective manner. She has the courage to continually show up and humbly share her knowledge in a seemingly effortless way.

Are you working on any exciting projects that you want to share with LF17 attendees?

We are pursuing Living Product Certification for our Moss Wall Art for building interiors.
